Nitrate is one of the most toxic nitrogen forms and it can cause severe mortality of fish in the aquariums as well as in the fish ponds/tanks.

The nitrate is formed in water by the oxidation of more toxic compounds ammonia and nitrite. However, nitrate is much less toxic then ammonia and nitrogen. Even though nitrate is less toxic, it can accumulates in the tank and eventually fish can be affected. The nitrate level in the water cannot be detected directly because of their invisibility and odorless properties. Furthermore, an algae bloom in the tank may indicates high nitrate levels, however, this cannot be conclusive as algae is able to grow in newly set-up tanks with low nitrate levels (10 ppm).

However, algae bloom may not be visible in all cases where the culture system or the tank are kept in dark place/ or in shed where sunlight does not reach sufficiently to carry to photosynthesis properly.

Thus, nitrate testing is also important along with other parameter for maintaining the proper health of the fish and other organisms.

In biofloc based fish farming Nitrate testing on regular basis is very important as nitrate buildup is very often observed in the biofloc tanks where the biofloc system fails. Nitrate accumulation in the biofloc tank is the early indication of failure of the system. In a propely managed biofloc system nitrate level should be nil or very less.

The Lifesonic Nitrate test kit may detect the small amount of nitrates within 5 minutes. The kit comes with three chemicals which upon mixing in recommended quantity produces varying intensity of magenta/red color. Higher the intensity of color, means higher the concentration of nitrate in your sample. Lifesonic Nitrite test kit can provide reading from 0 PPM to 160 PPM and over 150 tests can be performed from each kit.
